Yéle Launches Haiti Earthquake Alliance

Yéle Haiti has pulled together a group of like minded organizations and first responders in order to help coordinate the delivery of emergency services and materials needed by victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Each or the organizations will undertake their own fundraising and on-the-ground operations, but have agreed to share resources, collaborate when it makes sense and avoid duplication.

The members of this new Haiti Earthquake Alliance are:

Just formed in the last day, the Alliance has already pulled together four airlifts of medical supplies, food and other emergency supplies – along with teams of doctors. These airlifts will go out beginning Saturday. Keep checking back to this website for details.

Lands’ End tankinis are particularly comfortable and flattering. There are usually one or more tankinis shown with print tops, which some women prefer as a way to make their bustlines less of a focal point.

The Anita line includes a large selection of attractive mastectomy swimsuits, including bikinis. Anita suits are well-made, stylish, and come in a large variety of styles and fabrics.

Ingredients:

2 1/4 Cups (4 sticks) of unsalted butter

2 1/4 cups of sugar

9 eggs (at room temperature)

1 teaspoon of lemon extract

1 -1/4 teaspoons of grated lemon rind

3 cups of all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon of baking powder

1/4 teaspoon of salt

1 quart of strawberries hulled and sliced

DIRECTIONS:

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour a 10-inch tube pan. Tap out excess flour. Beat butter in a larger bowl until creamy. Beat in sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time. Beat lemon extract and rind. Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a small bowl. Gradually beat into butter mix­ture and beat on medium speed for 3 min­utes or until thick and creamy. Pour into pre­pared pan. Bake in heated oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Lower oven temper­ature to 300 degrees and bake 50 minutes more. Let cool in pan on wire rack for 15 minutes. Turn cake out onto rock to cool. Serve with strawberries.

Emergency Meals

In any given year, community and parish-based food programs supported by Catholic Charities provide more than 5.3 million nutritious meals to families and individuals who struggle to make ends meet. Volunteers at parishes operate many programs while others are located in community-based programs services are also available to help people toward independence. Most food pantries provide staples to be taken home, while other programs provide hot meals on-site. With the generous support of the Rusty Staub Foundation, Catholic Charities operates “Rusty’s Rolling Van,” a mobile food pantry that regularly provides meals and other services in Staten Island and the Bronx. The Rusty Staub Foundation also responds to help victims of emergencies in other parts of the metropolitan area.

Eviction Prevention

Families and individuals who, for whatever reason, are facing the loss of a home or apartment are assisted by highly trained Catholic Charities caseworkers to prevent eviction and homelessness. Staff will assess the situation and create a comprehensive plan to respond to the immediate emergency and help avoid future crisis. Caseworkers will work with landlords, legal services, and financial management programs, to help access rent subsidies and other government programs to assist families and individuals relocate to a new home. This type of emergency financial assistance is one way Catholic Charities responds to those in need.

Emergency Shelters

Parishes and other community organizations provide temporary shelter and respite for people living on the street. Some of these shelters are accessed through a central system, while others are more informal and can be accessed directly. Operated mainly by volunteers, Catholic Charities provides assistance to these shelters and can help those in need access their services.

Temporary and Transitional Residences

Transitional, supported housing is an important component to the network of housing resources provided by Catholic Charities. Dedicated religious women have often taken the lead in developing and operating these housing programs. Some residences are specifically designed to serve the needs of women and their children, while others are available to the general population. Most offer a variety of services to assist the homeless in moving towards permanent housing and independence.

Permanent Affordable Housing

Affordable housing developed by Catholic Charities and other parishes decades ago remain a precious, yet precarious resource. Catholic Charities has worked to make the Association of Catholic Homes an important vehicle, not only for preserving existing housing, but also for developing new affordable housing in the Archdiocese. All of these housing units have specific eligibility criteria, and many have significant waiting lists.

The staff at Glendale Adventist Medical Center are proud to give our community access to all of the tools that they need to fight and survive cancer.

To help do this, GAMC cancer experts, physical therpists and certified athletic trainers put together a unique Cancer Fitness Program. The program is for cancer patients following surgery, radiation and/or chemotherapy.

It is a free program to help cancer patients:

• Recapture lost strength
• Increase muscle mass
• Enhance joint range of motion
• Improve balance
• Regain inspiration and personal power to take an active role in treatment and recovery

The classes are conveniently located at the Therapy & Wellness Center where there is plenty of free parking, lockers and changing rooms for attendees.

Thanks to funds raised by the Glendale Historical Society Garden Tour, the Glendale Adventist Cancer Fitness Program is free to any cancer patient.

Angel Food Ministries

Each month Angel Food Ministries distributes food to needy families through churches and non-profit organizations. The cost for a medium-sized box of food – valued at more than $50 per unit – costs participants between $25-$30, depending on their location. Angel Food Ministries offers a different menu each month, and participants must pre-order prior to picking up their food items. More Info

2-1-1 is a service provided through the United Way that connects individuals and families with service organizations and assistance programs right in your immediate area. Dial 2-1-1 on your telephone to find out whether the service is active in your area at this time. Operators will then direct you to additional sources of food and assistance in your area.

Center for Food Action

Who We Help and How We Help Them

People come to CFA for many different reasons. Most of our clients are working people who have hit upon hard times due to an illness, a low paying job, or temporary unemployment. After calling CFA for help, an appointment is made for a needs assessment with an advocate. A client can then receive a week’s worth of food packages up to six times a year. Advocates link our clients to community programs, provide budgeting and nutritional counseling, and offer referrals to other social service organizations, as needed. Emergency utility and housing assistance are also available to prevent homelessness and/or service disconnection.
