in Cancer, Free Services, free wigs

American Cancer Society

Many local chapters of the American Cancer Society (ACS) provide free wigs through their wig banks. In order to determine if a chapter near you is donating wigs, visit the official ACS office locator here.

The ACS has also teamed with the Entertainment Industry Foundation to distribute free wigs donated by the Pantene Pro-V Beautiful Lengths campaign. Relying on ponytail donations from women across the country, the campaign creates the wigs and distributes them to ACS wig banks located across the country. If you are interested in obtaining a free wig, contact ACS at 1-877-227-1596.

CancerCare

Among them is the Wig and Turban Program, which offers free wigs in various styles and colors, as well as turbans and hats (also provided at no charge to the patient).

The Duke program is just one example of hundreds of similar programs across the country (another is the University of Michigan’s Comprehensive Cancer Center Wig Bank Program). To find out if a facility near you offers a free hairpiece service, contact your local ACS chapter or community hospital for further information.

Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization

Women with limited resources can take advantage of the Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization’s wig and prosthesis bank. This service provides up to 500 wigs annually to patients, along with wig care and styling tips and a 24 hour phone hotline. These services are made free thanks to the support of the organization’s donors. If you’re interested in receiving a free wig, contact Y-ME’s 24 hour hotline at 1-800-221-2141 to speak with a peer counselor.

Hi, My name is Karla. I wanted to organize wig drive at my local hospital but I ran into so much red tape that instead I wound up doing it through my church and it was a huge success. People donated wigs and other types of nice hats and scarves for the head. We collected about 80 pieces and distrubted them to the children in the pediatric ward.

Hi There

My name is Beverlee Thomas. I survived breast cancer 18 years ago and now I have been diagnosed with stage 3B lung cancer. I am starting chemo tomorrow and was told I may lose my hair. If I do and need a wig I was hoping to be able to get one without a significant cost since my hair will eventually grow back. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

14 kristin gustafson December 10, 2012 at 7:25 am

My name is Kristin, and my fiance of 6 years’s mother has pancreatic cancer, she is stage 3…This is her second round of chemo and now she has lost all of her hair and is extremely thin, all I would like to do for Christmas for her is help her feel like a woman again. She is 64 years old, has 5 children who are all adults..Unfortunately none of us can afford a wig for her right now. She won’t leave her apartment and is becoming very depressed, she is such a loving mother and grandmother and I feel like she deserves to feel like a beautiful woman again. She always wore nice outfits and was always well put together, so losing her hair has just made her not feel like herself. I would love to surprise her with a wig for Christmas. She has been a widdo for about 15 years now, as her husband passed away from liver cancer. And her son committed suicide 6 years ago at the age of 34. She has been through so much in her life, I am begging you to help me..I would love to surprise her and my fiance, because I know how horrible he feels for her..Thank you for taking the time to read this. Love Always
Kristin Gustafson

22 Holly June 7, 2013 at 1:15 am

Hello ,

I am Holly Smith, 20 Years Old , A mother and wife and was diagnosed in August of 2011 with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma ( Stage 2 ) . I didn’t know of my disease until about 7 months into my pregnancy I noticed an enlarged lymph node on my neck.. I let it go thinking it was merely just a cold coming on… ( in the summer??? ) yeah that is when I thought hmm.. something isn’t right . So I went onto WeB MD and gave them all of my symptoms.. they were my first diagnosis.. and it turned out to be 100% true when later in August I swelled on both sides of my neck with 8 golf ball sized nodes. They did a biopsy and told me of my cancer. My son was the reason my cancer was awoken , had he not been in my womb I wouldn’t have had symptoms nor a great chance of surviving.. So he is my little miracle <3…..

BaD NEWS : The first chemo regimen that lasted from aug '11 – may'13 was not working… so they recently switched me a month ago onto the hardest regimen the body can handle without being hospitalized , called , ICE. I had treatment today 6/6/13 and am still recovering :/ It sure does take something + out of ya. and with ICE comes burning urine, like a UTI.. but it is in fact the chemo drug, and can not be remedied. you just have to drink a lot of water to hopefully flush it faster. I shaved my head today because my hair couldn't hang on for this regimen. It did not fall out for the last regimen ( ABVD ) but i could not take looking at gobs and gobs of my long hair falling out anymore.. So my husband and I shaved it off today. :'(

Anyways.. I will endure Stem Cell Replacement With Karmano's Of Detroit ( I will be my own donor ) And I am terrified.. wish me luck! <3

also i purchased a wig that I am not that happy about .. maybe this site could help me?

23 Donna June 17, 2013 at 9:35 pm

I know what you are going through Holly. I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Breast Cancer on 5-13-2013 and it has been a nightmare. I have had 1 chemo treatment so far but haven’t lost any hair yet and mine is long as yours was. It breaks my heart you are so young and have to endure such aggressive therapy. I hope you have contacted all of the support groups I reached out to for financial, moral and medical co-pay/transportation assistance. Be sure to contact the American Cancer Society and they will give you a free wig if you aren’t happy with the one you chose. Also ball caps with hair attached to them are available. I haven’t looked at Locks for Love yet but that is another resource for a decent wig. Contact me by email with the list of resources you have at this point and I will compare them to my list. Friend me on FB Donna Dooley GOOD LUCK GIRL!

26 Patti Roble December 28, 2013 at 10:42 pm

Hello I have been going threw throat cancer. I had my 1st chemo appt 8 weeks ago and lost my hair right after the 1st chemo. I go Monday the 30th of Dec. for my 3rd chemo in Pittsburgh. I was wondering if there was any where I can get help on getting a wig so I don’t feel like everyone is looking at me when i leave the house. I know I shouldn’t feel like this but I do. I don’t no how much longer I can deal with this feeling. After Monday I have 3 more chemo appointments left hopefully. I have been fighting throat cancer since November 1993. Started out as thyroid cancer was bad but not as bad as this I didn’t lose my hair then not like now i have peach fuzz now. I can’t even look in the mirror. Thanks for any help I could get.

27 Denise January 13, 2014 at 8:03 pm

Reply to Patti Roble,
I survived breast cancer and have a beautiful chin length brown wig with golden highlights cut in an inverted bob style with slight bangs. I have been trying to give it to an cancer organization but they can only accept new wigs. I wore it less than 20 times and it has been professionally washed, so it is like new. If you want it, it is yours for free. Reply to this post with your email and we can arrange mailing it as I live in the Chicago area. All the best.
